・寸法:H2.5㎝(内側立ち上がり H1.3㎝)- W.D32.5㎝

Negoro Lacquer Tray with Uncut Corners | Muromachi Period

* Dimensions: Overall Height (H) 2.5 cm; Interior Wall Height 1.3 cm; Width × Depth (W × D) 32.5 cm
* Box: Newly made storage box

Compared with the more commonly encountered trays with clipped corners, this Negoro lacquer tray with intact, uncut corners is a considerably rarer form.

Carefully reinforced with layers of cloth beneath the lacquer, the tray displays the subtle beauty of naturally developed fine cracks in the lacquer surface, together with a striking contrast between the deep vermilion and the underlying black lacquer. Among the many surviving examples of Negoro lacquerware, this piece stands out for its exceptional visual character and refined workmanship.

Cracks that developed in later times have been professionally filled and reinforced by a lacquer specialist, providing the structural integrity necessary for practical use. The repairs have been undertaken with consideration for the character of the antique, allowing it to retain its aged beauty while remaining suitable for everyday enjoyment.

The tray is fitted with four small, low feet, and its overall height is a mere 2.5 cm. The interior wall rises only 1.3 cm, creating an exceptionally low profile that beautifully accentuates the form of any sake vessel placed upon it.

Rather than relying on elaborate ornamentation, the tray derives its quiet distinction from the interplay of vermilion and black lacquer, the texture of its aged surface, and its beautifully restrained proportions. These qualities embody the understated elegance characteristic of fine old Negoro lacquerware.

Placed before one for a quiet moment of solitary drinking, this tray elevates the presentation of a treasured sake vessel and lends an added sense of refinement to the occasion.

An exceptional example of Negoro lacquerware that offers not only historical significance and rarity, but also the enduring pleasure of living with and using a fine antique.
