仙厓義梵｜釈迦降誕図

画賛「我今灌沐諸如来御智荘厳功徳聚 五濁衆生今離垢願證如来浄法身」
我、今、諸の如来を灌沐す。
御智荘厳功徳の聚（あつまり）にして、
五濁の衆生、今、垢を離れ、
願わくは如来の浄法身を証せん。
・現代語訳
「私は今、諸仏・如来のお身体を清らかに灌いで供養します。
それによって、仏の智慧に荘厳された功徳が集まり、
煩悩や迷いに覆われたこの世の衆生が、今その垢を離れ、どうか如来の清らかな仏身・真理の境地を悟ることができますように。」
※同手に「釈迦降誕図」 仙厓義梵 江戸時代 九州大学文学部蔵・中山森彦旧蔵がある。

Inscription:
我今灌沐諸如来
御智荘厳功徳聚
五濁衆生今離垢
願證如来浄法身
Translation:
“Now I bathe and make offerings to all the Tathāgatas.
May the accumulated merits, adorned with the wisdom of the Buddha,
free all sentient beings of this world from the impurities of delusion,
and may they attain realization of the pure Dharma-body of the Tathāgata.”
This inscription is a Buddhist verse traditionally associated with the bathing of the newborn Buddha, an important ritual performed in celebration of Shakyamuni Buddha’s birth.
The image depicts the Buddha’s birth, and the inscription expresses the spiritual meaning of the ritual: through purification and devotion, one wishes for all sentient beings to be freed from the “impurities” of worldly delusion and ultimately realize the pure Dharma-body of the Buddha.
Provenance / Historical Note
Formerly a temple possession of Nanzen-ji, Kyoto, with a record of being deposited by Ichiro Fujigaki.
A closely related Shaka’s Birth painting by Sengai Gibon, executed in the same hand, is preserved in the collection of the Faculty of Letters, Kyushu University, formerly in the collection of Morihiko Nakayama.
